Daytime Smokey Eye Look Featuring Urban Decay’s Naked 2 Palette

Now that I work in a more conservative environment, I have had to tone down my makeup (boo!). That is why I am so thankful that I bit the bullet and bought my Naked 2 palette. It has come in very handy for the more neutral makeup looks that I have been wearing. I thought I would share what I consider to be a soft, work appropriate, daytime smokey eye look that I definitely have on rotation.

IMG_20150808_120435

My go to “work appropriate” daytime smokey eye and neutral lip.

Step 1:

PhotoGrid_1439038746831

I began my eye look by priming my eyelids with my Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden. I love using this primer because it has color neutralizing properties that counteract any discoloration that my eyelids might have. I then used a shimmery champagne eye pencil all over my mobile lid as an eye shadow base.

Step 2:

PhotoGrid_1439038808842

Next, I placed a cool toned mauve eye shadow right above my crease and blended it out and upwards. This color created a nice transition for the other shadows I would be using.

Step 3:

PhotoGrid_1439040152045

I then placed Suspect, a shimmery cool toned light bronze, from the Naked 2 Palette onto my mobile eye lid and blended it out into the mauve transition shade. I also ran it along my outer lower lashline (about 3/4 of the way in). I also filled in my eyebrows using an eye pencil, eyebrow powder and set them with a brown tinted eyebrow gel.

Step 4

PhotoGrid_1439040874348

I placed Pistol (also from the Naked 2) a shimmery, cool toned dark brown into the outer V of my upper eyelid and along the outer quarter of my lower lash line. I then blended out the color, adding more Pistol until I reached my desired intensity. I then took Bootycall a satin finish champagne color from the Naked 2 palette and applied it to my brow bone for a subtle highlight.

Step 5:

PhotoGrid_1439056341016

To complete my eye look I added a metallic taupe-pewter eyeliner to add definition to my upper lash line. I used this color instead of black eyeliner to create a softer eye look. To make my upper lashes appear fuller I tight lined my upper lash line with a long-wearing black eye liner. I then placed Verve (Naked 2) a light silver-bronze shade into my inner eye area. This just opens up my eyes and makes me look more awake.

PhotoGrid_1439954032664

To complete the look I added 2 coats of black mascara to my top lashes and 1 coat of a plum colored mascara to my lower lashes (I like using mascara in shades of purple on my lower lashes to emphasize my green eyes). I then added a matte mauve blush to my cheeks and mauve lip gloss to my lips. I also lightly highlighted and contoured my face.

Easy, Colorful Spring Makeup Look

res_1428177488183-1

Spring Makeup – Shimmery eyes with a pop of purple paired with rosy lips and cheeks.

I love Spring! From the weather, to the flowers (I’m a sucker for tulips), to the pastel color palette…I love it all! I thought I would share a spring look I created, using the pastel colors that I love. The inner eye color can easily be substituted out to more flatter your eye color e.g. green for brown eyes, bronze/copper for blue eyes. The step by step instructions on how I achieved my eye makeup are listed below. Happy Spring!

Step One:

res_1428183749418-1

I started my eyes off by priming them with a color neutralizing eye primer. Then I applied a white eye shadow pencil to my upper eyelid, inner eye area and lower waterline.

res_1428184031928-2

I blended out the eye pencil with my finger, making sure to pay extra attention to my inner eye area.

Step Two:

res_1428183127544-1

I applied a shimmery light champagne color over the white pencil on my upper eyelids, to add depth to the look, I added a cool toned light brown eye shadow, right above my crease and to my lower lash line.

res_1428183442478-1

After blending out the cool toned brown transition shade, I applied a sparkly white shadow to the center of each eyelid (I applied it with a damp brush to intensify the eye shadow’s shine and intensity) and lightly blended it outwards.

Step Three:

res_1428182366385-1

To keep the look light,I tight lined my upper lash line with a shimmery dark gray eye pencil rather than my usual black and lined my waterline with a shimmery light lilac eye pencil (over the white pencil).

res_1428182756749-1

Next, I lined my upper lash line with a blue-based purple eye pencil. I kept the line very thin, since I only wanted to use the liner to add definition to my lash line.

Step Four:

res_1428178201551-1

For a bright pop of spring color, I applied a shimmery, glittery lavender shadow to my inner eye area (I used a wet pencil brush to apply the color in order to get the exact placement of shadow that I wanted). To make sure the color was as intense as I wanted, I applied the shadow in a couple of layers.

res_1428177870825-1

Next, I applied a matte, pink-undertoned, white eye shadow to my brow bone. I made sure to blend this color into my transition shade to keep the look from looking choppy. To finish the eyes, I added two coats of mascara of black mascara to my upper lashes. I used a sparkly, purple mascara on my lower lashes.

Facetune-20150404-2010809762

To complete the spring theme of the look, I highlighted my cheekbones, the bridge and tip of my nose and cupid’s bow, I then applied a cool pink lip butter on my cheeks and lips for an extra dewy effect.

NYX Prismatic Shadows – Shown from left to right: PS 04 Girl Talk, PS 09 Fireball, PS 02 Punk Heart, and PS 06 Smoke & Mirrors

I am like a magpie of the makeup world, I love anything shiny and sparkly. Enter NYX Prismatic Shadows.  This new line of eye shadow comes in 12 shades, ranging from light silver to a deep aubergine and are priced at $6.00 a pot. They are advertised as an eye shadow that possesses extra sparkle and dimension with a fully pigmented metallic texture.

Facetune-201503282063020207

A close-up view of NYX Prismatic Shadows cute packaging <3

I purchased four colors from the range. In the pots they appeared sparkly and beautiful (minus Punk Heart which arrived broken to pieces…grrrr). However, I have to say when I swatched them, they weren’t near as shimmery/sparkly as I had thought or wanted them to be, especially the colors Girl Talk and Punk Heart.

Swatches (flash used) – Left to Right: PS 04 Girl Talk, PS 09 Fireball, PS 02 Punk Heart, and PS 06 Smoke & Mirrors

Also, I found the consistency to change from shade to shade. Fireball was extremely buttery and pigmented, it’s formula is by far my favorite of the four I picked up. While Girl Talk and Smoke & Mirrors formula is quite dusty and dry. The pigment of Girl Talk was also a let down, it is very sheer and took a lot of layers to get the shade as it appeared in the pot (that is why my swatch of this shade is so much larger, it took several applications to get it to show up), I would definitely suggest using this shade with a damp brush (as I did in my look) to get the best results from this shade.

res_1427571991794-1-1

For this eye look, I applied Girl Talk from my lash lash to crease (I later went in and reapplied this shadow with a damp brush, since using it dry, I wasn’t achieving the desired intensity and shimmer that I had wanted) and all along my lower lash line. Next, I applied Punk Heart to the outer V of my eye and blended into the crease. For added definition and to keep the eye liner in my water line from moving, I used a flat liner brush to place Punk Heart all along my lower lash line. To add more depth to the look I applied Smoke and Mirrors with a small eye detailer brush to the very outer corner of my upper eyelid and the outer third of lower lash line.

res_1427571715193-1-1

I didn’t want a total shimmery eye look, so I applied a matte mauve eye shadow above my crease and blended well. For my brow bone highlight, I added a matte white eye shadow with pink undertones. To highlight and open up my eyes, I applied a shimmery champagne eye shadow to the inner corner of my eyes. To add more definition to my eye, I applied a black gel liner to my upper lash line and smudged it out using the Smoke & Mirrors shade.

Pros:

  • Super cute packaging
  • Price
  • Staying Power

Cons:

  • Inconsistent formulation of shadows
  • Differing pigment from shade to shade
  • NYX line not widely available in stores
  • Only 12 shades in line
  • Fallout from shadows

Bottom Line:

I find these shadows to be okay. Maybe I have been spoiled by my Colour Pop eye shadows with their awesome pigmentation, super creamy formulation and no fallout. All in all, I am happy with the colors I have purchased, but I don’t see myself purchasing any more shadows from this line, they are way to hit and miss.

Essence Lipsticks – Bargain or Bust?

essence lipsticks: 07 Natural Beauty, 11 Nude Love and 12 Sparkling Miracle (left to right)

essence lipsticks: 07 Natural Beauty, 12 Sparkling Miracle, and  Nude Love  (left to right)

Let’s be real, when you see a lipstick with a $2.99 price tag (full price – not on sale) you might think to yourself, “that lipstick is probably total crap, I don’t want to put that anywhere near my lips.” Well, the lipsticks by essence will quickly have you changing your tune.

Swatches: 12 Sparkling Miracle (top), 07 Natural Beauty, (middle) 11 Nude Love (bottom)

Swatches: 12 Sparkling Miracle (top), 07 Natural Beauty (middle), 11 Nude Love (bottom)

Initially, I only bought one lipstick (again, at the time, I didn’t want to waste my money on crap). It was 12 Sparkling Miracle (could have given it a better name), a beautiful shimmery magenta-ish purple. Needless to say, from the first swipe, I was pleasantly surprised and very pleased with this product. I later ended up purchasing two more colors from essence’s Longlasting line of lipsticks: 07 Natural Beauty, a pink your lips but better shade and 11 Nude Love, a beautiful pale peach toned nude. All the lipsticks are creamy, well pigmented, non-drying, and last for a good length of time. I would compare their formula to my NARS lipsticks, which I also love.

11 Nude Love

11 Nude Love – No lip liner used, you can easily apply one for more lip definition and added depth.

07 Natural Beauty

07 Natural Beauty – No lip liner used.

12 Sparkling Miracle

12 Sparkling Miracle – No lip liner used. I applied a more sheer application here, can easily build color to be more intense.

Pros:

  • Price
  • Smooth and even application
  • Creamy texture
  • Shimmer formula is non-gritty in texture
  • Staying Power
  • Longlasting formula isn’t drying

Cons:

  • essence brand only available at Ulta or Ulta.com
  • Unlike other drugstore lipstick lines, color selection is sparse

Bottom Line:

I love, love, love these lipsticks and could not recommend them more. The Nude Love shade is quickly becoming my most used nude lipstick. These are a definite must in your makeup collection. In the future, I will definitely be picking up some more colors.

Night Out St.Patrick’s Day Makeup Look

I wanted to create a fun, green smokey eye makeup look anyone could rock for St.Patrick’s Day (or, really any time). Below, are the steps I took to achieve this smokey eye.

Perfect365_Share_1426378801158

Green smokey eye with neutral blush and nude lips.

Step One:

First, I applied my eye primer, from upper lash line to eyebrow and along my lower lash line. Next, I added a warm light brown shade above my crease and blended to create a transition shade between the vivid green eyeshadows and the much lighter brow highlight, I was going to be using.

First, I applied my eye primer, from upper lash line to eyebrow and along my lower lash line.  For an eyeshadow base, I added a white eye pencil (using a white base will make my eyeshadow colors pop) to my upper mobile lid, inner corner of my eye and lower lashline. I then blended this out with my finger. Next, I added a warm light brown shade above my crease and blended to create a transition shade between the vivid green eyeshadows and the much lighter brow highlight, I was going to be using.

I added a light green shimmery green eyeshadow all over my upper eyelid to just above the crease and all along my lower lash line. i blened the green into the warm brown eyeshadow so there would be no harsh lines between the two colors.

I added a light green shimmery green eyeshadow all over my upper eyelid to just above the crease and all along my lower lash line. I blended the green into the warm brown eyeshadow so there would be no harsh lines between the two colors.  I also filled my eyebrows in with a warm, medium brown eye pencil. Please excuse the color variance in these first step photos, I forgot to turn on my flash :(

Step Two:

res_1426362371325-1

To create some depth to the look, I added a shimmery mid-tone green to my outer V and outer third of my lower lash line.

res_1426362104863-1

I then blended the shadow into my crease (roughly halfway in). I also blended the shadow along my lower lashline.

Step Three:

res_1426363660293-1

To add more vibrancy to the look, I added a shimmery bright green to the center of my lid.

res_1426365704494-1

I then added a deep, dark green to the very outer corner of the upper eyelid and blended lightly, as to not spread the color too far. I did not add this color to my lower lashline.

Step Four:

res_1426374403844-1

I applied a black liquid liner to my upper lashline, making the line thicker on the outer edge. Next, I added a shimmery, metallic teal shimmery eye pencil to my lower waterline.

res_1426378463153-1

I then added a combination of very light toned eyeshadows to my inner eye and brow bone for a nice highlight.

Step Five:

res_1426360743508-1

I finished up with adding lots of mascara to my upper lashes…i forgot to add mascara to my lower lashes…woops. But, if I was recreating this look, I would definitely add it. As a final step to my eyebrows, I shaped them using a medium brown eyebrow pomade and followed with an eyebrow gel.

res_1426360468302-1

For an added playful feel, I added gold glitter to my inner eye area.

Final Look:

res_1426379081744

To keep my eyes as the main focus of this look, I added a mixture of matte blushes in a cool, dusty pink shade and a terracotta shade. I added a warm, champagne highlight to my upper cheekbones, above the apples of my cheeks and alonf the bridge of my nose and above my cupid’s bow. I then lined my lips with a nude lip liner and topped it off with a matte nude lipstick.

Valentine’s Day Look #2 – Pink Shimmery Eye with Red Matte Lip

Light Shimmery Eye and Bold Red Lip Look

Light Shimmery Eye and Bold Red Lip Look

For my second Valentine’s Day look, I wanted the focus to be on my lips. I decided to go with a strong red lip paired with a pink, shimmery eye. I chose a matte formula liquid lipstick (for the staying power), since most likely your Valentine’s Day plans will involve drinking and/or eating and hopefully lots of kissing. Sadly, this lippie did not even come close to my expectations (I will have a full review on this line of products in a future post). Here is a step by step tutorial of how I did my pink, shimmery eye.

Step One:

res_1423444298509-1

I started by priming my entire upper eye area and lower lash line, with a matte, tinted eye primer. I chose this primer to cover any discoloration on my eyelids since I would be using light colors on my eyes. Then from my upper lash line to crease I applied a matte white eye shadow pencil to act as a base and really make the eye shadows I was going to use pop.

res_1423444276832-1

I also added a translucent face powder from my crease to my eyebrow, which helps the powder eye shadows blend better (I do not do this step if I am working with creme shadows).

Step Two:

res_1423444253977-1

Next, I added a soft cool pink eye shadow to my crease. Then I blended it out and up, to create a transition shade for all of my eye shadows.

res_1423444230598-1

I added a sparkly off-white eye shadow over the white base on my eyelids. I went over this with a shimmery, pale pink loose pigment, and blended this into my transition shade.

Step Three:

res_1423444207656-1

I used a bright fuschia eye shadow with a satin finish formula in my crease to add more depth and definition.

res_1423444185700-1

I made sure to blend this color really well with with a fluffy blending brush, using wind shield wiper motions (back and forth).

Step Four:

2015-02-10 12.55.47-1

I then wet a flat shader brush and dipped it into my loose pigment, that I had used in step 2. I applied this to my eyelids, to make them really sparkle, as well as, cover some of the fuschia shadow that had gotten on my eyelid during the blending process. I blended only the edges of this shadow, as to not disrupt it’s intensity and sparkle. I tightlined my upper lash line with a black pencil eye liner, before adding a black liquid liner to my upper lash line. To lift and open up my eyes, I added a small wing at the end. To give the illusion of bigger eyes, I lined my lower waterline with a shimmery, white eye pencil. I then used the same sparkly, off-white shadow to highlight my inner eye area and a matte white shade with a hint of pink undertones to highlight my brow bone. I finished up by adding 2 coats of mascara (one coat thickening, one coat lengthening) to my upper lashes and one coat of mascara to my lower lashes.
