Daytime Smokey Eye Look Featuring Urban Decay’s Naked 2 Palette

Now that I work in a more conservative environment, I have had to tone down my makeup (boo!). That is why I am so thankful that I bit the bullet and bought my Naked 2 palette. It has come in very handy for the more neutral makeup looks that I have been wearing. I thought I would share what I consider to be a soft, work appropriate, daytime smokey eye look that I definitely have on rotation.

My go to “work appropriate” daytime smokey eye and neutral lip.

Step 1:

PhotoGrid_1439038746831

I began my eye look by priming my eyelids with my Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden. I love using this primer because it has color neutralizing properties that counteract any discoloration that my eyelids might have. I then used a shimmery champagne eye pencil all over my mobile lid as an eye shadow base.

Step 2:

PhotoGrid_1439038808842

Next, I placed a cool toned mauve eye shadow right above my crease and blended it out and upwards. This color created a nice transition for the other shadows I would be using.

Step 3:

PhotoGrid_1439040152045

I then placed Suspect, a shimmery cool toned light bronze, from the Naked 2 Palette onto my mobile eye lid and blended it out into the mauve transition shade. I also ran it along my outer lower lashline (about 3/4 of the way in). I also filled in my eyebrows using an eye pencil, eyebrow powder and set them with a brown tinted eyebrow gel.

Step 4

PhotoGrid_1439040874348

I placed Pistol (also from the Naked 2) a shimmery, cool toned dark brown into the outer V of my upper eyelid and along the outer quarter of my lower lash line. I then blended out the color, adding more Pistol until I reached my desired intensity. I then took Bootycall a satin finish champagne color from the Naked 2 palette and applied it to my brow bone for a subtle highlight.

Step 5:

PhotoGrid_1439056341016

To complete my eye look I added a metallic taupe-pewter eyeliner to add definition to my upper lash line. I used this color instead of black eyeliner to create a softer eye look. To make my upper lashes appear fuller I tight lined my upper lash line with a long-wearing black eye liner. I then placed Verve (Naked 2) a light silver-bronze shade into my inner eye area. This just opens up my eyes and makes me look more awake.

PhotoGrid_1439954032664

To complete the look I added 2 coats of black mascara to my top lashes and 1 coat of a plum colored mascara to my lower lashes (I like using mascara in shades of purple on my lower lashes to emphasize my green eyes). I then added a matte mauve blush to my cheeks and mauve lip gloss to my lips. I also lightly highlighted and contoured my face.

Urban Decay – Naked 2 Review and Swatches

20150726194375014

I love the packaging of the Naked 2 palette. It is very sleek (I would say it is about 6 inches in length and about 1/2 in depth), made from a sturdy metal and is a beautiful matte taupe color with metallic bronze lettering. I also appreciate that it snaps shut so I know that it is completely closed and the eye shadows are protected.

You could say that I am late to the game on the Naked palettes from Urban Decay…very late. I just couldn’t justify purchasing one since unlike the other 99% of the makeup wearing population, I don’t wear a lot of neutrals on my eyes. I am a total color girl. However, there were a few eye shadows I was hitting pan on from other Urban Decay palettes that I own. Upon further investigation I found four of them were included in the Naked 2 palette (Half Baked, YDK, Verve, and Blackout) and decided for the price I should just opt for buying the Naked 2 palette ($54 vs. $18 for their individual pans of eye shadow).

201507261179174082

The palette comes with 12 generous sized eye shadows and an excellent quality double sided brush.

When I received the palette I was very pleased. I love the packaging, it is very sleek and sturdy and would be ideal for travel. While I thought this was going to be a more cool toned eye shadow palette, I was pleasantly surprised to see both cool and warm tones. There was also a nice mix of matte, satin, shimmer, and metallic finishes. One thing I really enjoy about this palette is I have noticed far less fall out from these shadows than I normally experience from Urban Decay or other brands.

20150726-1206929406

A close-up shot of all these beautiful eye shadows . My favorites are Half Baked, Chopper, Pistol, Verve and YDK….who am I kidding? They are all my favorite!

The shadows have a buttery texture, are very highly pigmented and blend like a dream. Which is no surprise coming from Urban Decay. I do recommend using an eye shadow primer (I love Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in Eden or NARS Pro-Prime) before you apply the shadows to make them more intense and longer lasting. I love the look of Half Baked and Chopper when applied with a damp brush. It really intensifies the metallic look of the shadow.

I apologize for the poor quality of these pictures, they definitely do not give these swatches justice! These swatches were applied without eye shadow primer. From left to right: Foxy, Half Baked, Bootycall, Chopper, Tease, and Snakebite

Swatches from left to right: Suspect, Pistol, Verve, YDK, Busted, and Blackout

Overall, I don’t think this palette is a “necessity”, but I definitely think you get a lot of bang for your buck. If you are a neutral eye shadow kind of person, I think you would get a ton of use from this palette. It is very easy to transition this palette from day to night. A favorite combination of mine to wear for day is Verve on the inner third of my eyelid, Pistol on the outer 2/3 of my eyelid and blended up into the crease,  I then do the same with my lower lash line. Next, I blend Tease into my crease to transition the eye shadow from my eyelid to my eyebrow bone. The last step I do is to add Bootycall to my eyebrow bone and inner eye area to brighten the whole look. For night, I just use a small detail brush and add Blackout to the outer corners of my eyes and softly diffuse it. I also add it to the outer third of my lower lash line and blend it out. This is just one look I have enjoyed wearing, I feel that with this palette their are tons of different combinations you could use, or better yet just use one color as a wash over your entire eyelid…beautiful. If you are in the market for a neutral eye shadow palette I would highly recommend that you give the Urban Decay Naked 2 a go. You won’t be disappointed.

My Top 6 Favorite Spring Lippies

Don’t get me wrong, I love rocking a vampy lip in the colder months or a subtle nude lip year round. But there is something refreshing about putting on a baby pink or bright coral lip come springtime. I thought I would share my top 6 (5 just wouldn’t cut it for me) favorite lip products for Spring.

Lippies from left to right (no flash used) - Urban Decay Obsessed, NARS Roman Holiday, Revlon Rich Girl Red, BUXOM Sweet Thing, NYX Instanbul, and Rimmel Little Minx

Lippies from left to right (flash used) – Urban Decay Obsessed, NARS Roman Holiday, Revlon Rich Girl Red, BUXOM Sweet Thing, NYX Istanbul, and Rimmel Little Minx

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Obsessed ($22) - The shade is described as a bright baby pink and I find it to be quite opaque in it's coverage. This is a highly pigmented, creamy lipstick formula that is non-drying to my lips.

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Obsessed ($22) – The shade is described as a bright baby pink and I find it to be quite opaque in it’s coverage. This is a highly pigmented, creamy lipstick formula that is non-drying to my lips. An added bonus is this lipstick’s packaging is not only very durable but also beautiful.

NARS lipstick in Roman Holiday ($27) - This shade is described as a sheer, delicate pastel pink. I find this lipstick to be a beautiful shade of pink with a cool, almost purple undertone. This is my all time favorite lipstick. I love it. I find this lipstick to be very moisturizing (it contains Vitamin E). It can be worn sheer or is easily buildable to create a more intense lip look.

Perfect365_Share_1431028787262

Revlon Super Lusterous Lipstick in Rich Girl Red ($5-$8 depending on where you purchase it) – This is a sheer brick red color with orange undertones. It provides a high shine finish and adds moisture to the lips (contains Vitamin E and avocado oil). This formula is easily buildable to create a more intense red lip.

BUXOM Full-Bodied Lip Gloss in Sweet Thing ($19) – This shade is described as hot pink. For me, this is definitely not the case. Sweet Thing is more a pinky coral on my lips. It is also advertised to have a non-tingle plumping effect. I have not noticed any plumping with this gloss, however, I love the formula. It is quite sheer with a subtle shimmer and is hydrating to the lips. It is also long-lasting for a lip gloss.

Perfect365_Share_1431027059555

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Istanbul ($6) – This is a warm pink color with coral undertones. It is a very creamy formula that sets to a matte finish. I wouldn’t say it is moisturizing to my lips, but for a matte formula I don’t find it to be drying. This shade is easily adaptable by adding a pink or nude lip liner.

Perfect365_Share_1431026316389

Rimmel Provoalips 16 Hr Kissproof Lipstick in Little Minx ($6.99) – This shade is described as a medium bright fuchsia and I would say that is a very accurate description. This is a 2 step lip product, a stain on one end and a moisturizing top coat on the other. This is a VERY long-wearing product and is perfect for all day wear, since touch ups will be rare. My 2 complaints with this liquid lipstick are it’s yucky fragrance/taste of the top coat and it’s juvenile packaging (see previous post for more information on the Provocalips liquid lipsticks).

Ulta Super Shiny Lip Butter Review and Swatches

Facetune-20150412-1640372553

Ulta Super Shiny Lip Butters come in 10 shades ranging from neutral beige to bright berries. They are priced at $8.00 a piece. Colors shown: NY, London and LA (left to right)

Ulta brand products have always been hit and miss for me. I find their prices to be quite expensive for what you are getting. Plus, in my opinion the product packaging leaves a lot to be desired. With a price point comparable to Sephora’s namesake brand, I feel there is much improvement needed for the Ulta line to be on par with Sephora’s. However, a few weeks back they were having an awesome sale on Ulta products (on sale plus buy 2 get 2 free!), I decided to try my luck and order a few different Ulta lip products. FYI, when I was researching this post, I noticed that they are again having a sale on Ulta products buy 2 get 2 free :)

Super Shiny Lip Butters Swatched from left to right: LA, NY and London

But, I digress back to the review. Minus my everyday staple transition eye shadow in Sable, these Super Shiny Lip Butters are by far my favorite Ulta product that I have tried. I purchased 3 of them and wish I would have bought more. All 10 shades are named after different cities throughout the World. Although, the textures of each shade I purchased are different, I did not notice any difference in the creaminess or ease of application. These babies just glide onto the lips, leaving a beautiful, pigmented, high shine result, each and every time. I also find these to have an excellent staying power for a lip butter product. While on the lips, my lips felt soft and moisturized, but after the product wore off, I felt they left my lips quite dry (I normally don’t ever suffer from dry lips). Since I love these so much, I have just added a lip balm pre application to prevent the dryness factor from occurring.

Perfect365_Share_1428867736247

On lips: LA Ulta describes this shade as a sheer bright blue pink. I think it is a perfect everyday shade for spring and summer.

Perfect365_Share_1428868285883

On lips: NY Ulta describes this shade as a sheer berry. I find on me it is more of a sheer cool toned red. This color is easily buildable for a more intense look.

Perfect365_Share_1428794248484

On lips: London Ulta describes this as a berry with flecks of gold pearl. My absolute favorite (this should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me). I love this color! This shade is very buildable which makes it a perfect shade for day or night.

Pros:

  • Rich color pigmentation
  • Lasts much longer than other lip butters that I have tried
  • Unscented
  • Price when you buy them on sale

Cons:

  • Very cheap packaging
  • Not as moisturizing as I would have liked
  • Limited color selection compared to other makeup brands’ lip butter lines

Bottom Line:

I love these lip butters. If only they had added more moisture to my lips they would have been perfect. I would definitely purchase more colors from this line…but only if they were on sale. I find the $8.00 price to be a little steep since the packaging is so cheaply made.

Essence Lipsticks – Bargain or Bust?

essence lipsticks: 07 Natural Beauty, 11 Nude Love and 12 Sparkling Miracle (left to right)

essence lipsticks: 07 Natural Beauty, 12 Sparkling Miracle, and  Nude Love  (left to right)

Let’s be real, when you see a lipstick with a $2.99 price tag (full price – not on sale) you might think to yourself, “that lipstick is probably total crap, I don’t want to put that anywhere near my lips.” Well, the lipsticks by essence will quickly have you changing your tune.

Swatches: 12 Sparkling Miracle (top), 07 Natural Beauty, (middle) 11 Nude Love (bottom)

Swatches: 12 Sparkling Miracle (top), 07 Natural Beauty (middle), 11 Nude Love (bottom)

Initially, I only bought one lipstick (again, at the time, I didn’t want to waste my money on crap). It was 12 Sparkling Miracle (could have given it a better name), a beautiful shimmery magenta-ish purple. Needless to say, from the first swipe, I was pleasantly surprised and very pleased with this product. I later ended up purchasing two more colors from essence’s Longlasting line of lipsticks: 07 Natural Beauty, a pink your lips but better shade and 11 Nude Love, a beautiful pale peach toned nude. All the lipsticks are creamy, well pigmented, non-drying, and last for a good length of time. I would compare their formula to my NARS lipsticks, which I also love.

11 Nude Love

11 Nude Love – No lip liner used, you can easily apply one for more lip definition and added depth.

07 Natural Beauty

07 Natural Beauty – No lip liner used.

12 Sparkling Miracle

12 Sparkling Miracle – No lip liner used. I applied a more sheer application here, can easily build color to be more intense.

Pros:

  • Price
  • Smooth and even application
  • Creamy texture
  • Shimmer formula is non-gritty in texture
  • Staying Power
  • Longlasting formula isn’t drying

Cons:

  • essence brand only available at Ulta or Ulta.com
  • Unlike other drugstore lipstick lines, color selection is sparse

Bottom Line:

I love, love, love these lipsticks and could not recommend them more. The Nude Love shade is quickly becoming my most used nude lipstick. These are a definite must in your makeup collection. In the future, I will definitely be picking up some more colors.

Night Out St.Patrick’s Day Makeup Look

I wanted to create a fun, green smokey eye makeup look anyone could rock for St.Patrick’s Day (or, really any time). Below, are the steps I took to achieve this smokey eye.

Perfect365_Share_1426378801158

Green smokey eye with neutral blush and nude lips.

Step One:

First, I applied my eye primer, from upper lash line to eyebrow and along my lower lash line. Next, I added a warm light brown shade above my crease and blended to create a transition shade between the vivid green eyeshadows and the much lighter brow highlight, I was going to be using.

First, I applied my eye primer, from upper lash line to eyebrow and along my lower lash line.  For an eyeshadow base, I added a white eye pencil (using a white base will make my eyeshadow colors pop) to my upper mobile lid, inner corner of my eye and lower lashline. I then blended this out with my finger. Next, I added a warm light brown shade above my crease and blended to create a transition shade between the vivid green eyeshadows and the much lighter brow highlight, I was going to be using.

I added a light green shimmery green eyeshadow all over my upper eyelid to just above the crease and all along my lower lash line. i blened the green into the warm brown eyeshadow so there would be no harsh lines between the two colors.

I added a light green shimmery green eyeshadow all over my upper eyelid to just above the crease and all along my lower lash line. I blended the green into the warm brown eyeshadow so there would be no harsh lines between the two colors.  I also filled my eyebrows in with a warm, medium brown eye pencil. Please excuse the color variance in these first step photos, I forgot to turn on my flash :(

Step Two:

res_1426362371325-1

To create some depth to the look, I added a shimmery mid-tone green to my outer V and outer third of my lower lash line.

res_1426362104863-1

I then blended the shadow into my crease (roughly halfway in). I also blended the shadow along my lower lashline.

Step Three:

res_1426363660293-1

To add more vibrancy to the look, I added a shimmery bright green to the center of my lid.

res_1426365704494-1

I then added a deep, dark green to the very outer corner of the upper eyelid and blended lightly, as to not spread the color too far. I did not add this color to my lower lashline.

Step Four:

res_1426374403844-1

I applied a black liquid liner to my upper lashline, making the line thicker on the outer edge. Next, I added a shimmery, metallic teal shimmery eye pencil to my lower waterline.

res_1426378463153-1

I then added a combination of very light toned eyeshadows to my inner eye and brow bone for a nice highlight.

Step Five:

res_1426360743508-1

I finished up with adding lots of mascara to my upper lashes…i forgot to add mascara to my lower lashes…woops. But, if I was recreating this look, I would definitely add it. As a final step to my eyebrows, I shaped them using a medium brown eyebrow pomade and followed with an eyebrow gel.

res_1426360468302-1

For an added playful feel, I added gold glitter to my inner eye area.

Final Look:

res_1426379081744

To keep my eyes as the main focus of this look, I added a mixture of matte blushes in a cool, dusty pink shade and a terracotta shade. I added a warm, champagne highlight to my upper cheekbones, above the apples of my cheeks and alonf the bridge of my nose and above my cupid’s bow. I then lined my lips with a nude lip liner and topped it off with a matte nude lipstick.

Valentine’s Day Look #1 – Smokey Eye with Pink Lip

Facetune-20150209-1186645139

The first Valentine’s Day look I wanted to share with you, is this brown smokey eye, paired with a rosy cheek and pink glossy lip. Here are the step by step instructions I used, to achieve my smokey eyes:

Step One:

20150207934973770-1

First, I primed my eyelids and lower lash line with an eye primer. I also added a champagne cream shadow pencil to my eye lids as an eye shadow base, to help my eye shadow last longer.

I also added a matte neutral brown eyeshadow to the crease and blended upward, to create a nice transition for all my eye shadows.

Step Two:

Next, I added a shimmery, light brown eye shadow to my entire eyelids and lower lash lines.

Next, I added a shimmery, light brown eye shadow from my lash line to my crease and lower lash line.

20150207-1775415903-1

I made sure to blend this color with the transition color, I had placed in my crease.

Step Three:

201502071558551129-1

Then, I followed with a medium brown shimmery eye shadow which I placed in my outer V of my eye and blended it out, bringing some of the color into the crease.

I also brought this medium brown eye shadow along the outer half of my lower lash line. I made sure to blend so there would be a smooth transition from one color to the next

Step Four:

201502071756393038-1

To add even more definition to my eyes, I added a satin finish, very dark brown eye shadow to the very outer corner of my eye in a small diamond shape. Then, I tightlined my upper and lower waterline. I also added a matte black shadow over the liner in my water line to add depth and longevity.

20150207-1645823728-1

I also lined my upper lash line with a smudgeable black eyeliner and smoked it out with some matter black eye shadow (same shadow I used in my waterline), I then added a shimmery cream color eye shadow to my inner eye area to open up my eyes.

Step Five:

Add lots and lots of mascara to top and bottom lashes.

To finish my look I added a shimmery rosy pink blush to my cheeks. I highlighted my cheekbones with a champagne gold highlighter. Lined and filled in my lips with a pink lip liner, added a cool toned pink lipstick and added a creamy pink gloss to the center of my lips.
